Statistics Netherlands (CBS)
As a society, we want rapid information based on reliable figures so we know what is going on in the world around us. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) provides relevant and independent figures on a wide range of societal issues. This requires a high degree of flexibility from CBS, something our staff work hard on to achieve every day. Whether the issue is climate change, sustainability, the housing challenge or poverty, we respond to the need for transparent and accessible information.
Keynote speaker: Klaas-Jan van Heeringen
Numbers in Water – Real-time Mathematics in Water Management
Klaas-Jan van Heeringen is an operational water management engineer at Deltares, specialized in real-time Flood Early Warning Systems, with personal focus on flash-flood conditions, real-time control or transboundary river basins. His currently 28 years of experience includes projects all over the world, besides the Netherlands.
In the last 5-10 years, his role shifted more and more towards complex projects. Examples of these are the Sava Flood Forecasting system (for the 5 riparian countries of the Sava River Basin, in South-eastern Europe, where the implemented system focused on being much more than an expert tool only: it facilitated the international cooperation between the 10 forecasting organizations. Besides many other projects, he is currently leading the implementation of the combined Sudan and Egypt Nile Forecasting system.
Having broad international expertise on hydrological forecasiting Klaas-Jan is frequently asked to have supporting and advising roles in various other flood forecasting systems.

- 5x simulation techniques and synthestic data cases
- 5x opportunity to discuss & share ideas
How does it work?
Five speakers from the industry or academia will pitch their case and/or question. In an open space set up you can connect with the speakers and other participants to discuss the case and share ideas to solve the question. You will be able to move around to join other discussions or start a new one.
