Mathematics for Top Sectors
The innovations taking place in top sectors can benefit greatly from advanced mathematical techniques. Math4NL is in the process of developing a vision and corresponding outreach programme for each top sector regarding the contribution of mathematics to the challenges within that top sector. For two top sectors (Energy and Horticulture & Propagation Materials), the initial steps have already been taken. In the coming years, we hope to do the same for additional top sectors. Brainstorming mathematics for the energy transition
Energy systems play a central role in the transition that we need to make towards renewable energy. Many challenges around energy systems require things like forecasting, optimisation, planning and risk assessment, which are in essence mathematical or computational in nature. It is only natural, therefore, to apply advances in computing and mathematics to solve these challenges.
This white paper proposes avenues to do just that. This white paper is the result of a brainstorm by a group of specialists from the energy sector and a group of mathematical researchers. To deepen the results, additional conversations were held with some of the specialists and researchers.
Mathematics for Challenges in Agriculture
The agricultural and horticultural sectors are facing huge challenges: we need to produce food for an estimated 10 billion people by 2050, adapt to climate change, and deal with changing conditions and regulations, such as the reduction of the use of fertiliser, fresh water, and pesticides. Mathematicians can and should play a key role in required innovation in these sectors: their unique expertise will be essential to meet the challenges.
