Bij Math4NL zijn wij er van overtuigd dat wiskunde kan helpen allerlei uitdagingen van technische, maatschappelijke, economische en sociale aard op te lossen. Maar we hebben ook ervaren dat het niet altijd makkelijk is om wiskundigen en bedrijven of maatschappelijke organisaties met elkaar te verbinden.
Math4NL wil de duurzame samenwerking tussen wiskundigen en de maatschappij versterken. We vergemakkelijken de samenwerking tussen wiskundig Nederland en organisaties. We bieden ondersteuning bij de vertaling van praktische vraagstukken naar een wiskundig probleem en zoeken de juiste wiskundige om daar aan te werken.
Wiskundige talenten zetten zo hun kennis in voor vraagstukken van organisaties, verbreden hun expertise en ontwikkelen nieuwe wiskunde verder.

Vivi Rottschäfer – voorzitter
Vivi Rottschäfer is Associate Professor in the Analysis and Dynamical Systems group of the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University and she is Professor by special appointment ”Industrial Mathematics” at the Korteweg-de Vries Instituut of the University of Amsterdam.
She is a specialist in dynamical systems theory and partial differential equations with a focus on applications. She has joint projects with researchers in pharmacology on drug distribution, delivery and effect, and environmental scientists at NIOZ and the RIVM.
Vivi is the chair of the Committee on Innovation of Platform Wiskunde Nederland. The aim of this committee is to bring mathematicians at companies and universities together. As part of this, Vivi chairs the National Committee SWI, which coordinates the organisation of the Dutch Studygroup Mathematics with Industry. She has organised two of these studygroups herself.
Alessandro Di Bucchianico
Alessandro Di Bucchianico is head of an industrial statistics group at Eindhoven University of Technology within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. His research focuses on statistical process control and reliability, with an emphasis on the challenges and opportunities that arise in the context of Industry 4.0 and data science.
He actively stimulates the collaboration between universities and society through his activities in national and international bodies such as the Innovation Committee of the Dutch Platform for Mathematics, the Big Data working group of 4TUAMI , and the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS). He is one of the national organizers of the Dutch Studygroup Mathematics with Industry (SWI).
Alessandro actively participates in several national and European industrial projects.
John Poppelaars founded his company Doing The Math to realise his ambition to support organisations in becoming more sustainable. John is a passionate proponent of the use of data and mathematics as a key business enabler. Throughout his career, he has applied the business maxim of ‘fact-based improvement of decision making’ to numerous projects across many industries.
John was awarded the Franz Edelman Award for this work at TNT Express, which resulted in substantial financial savings and CO2 emission reduction. Next to his work for Doing The Math, he is an advisor to the The Hague University of Applied Sciences and blogs about the practical application of mathematics.
John has a Master’s degree in Econometrics & Operations Research and is INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional.
Sanjay Ramawadh is senior lecturer Applied Mathematics at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. He is head of the learning line stochastics & statistics of the BSc programme Applied Mathematics and teaches several courses with a focus on stochastics, statistics and research methodology.
He is interested in real-life applications of mathematics and actively encourages students to explore these applications as well. Not only through internships, but also by participating in local hackthons or national activities such as the Dutch Studygroup Mathematics with Industry (SWI). Next to his work as a senior lecturer, Sanjay has recently joined a project on student analytics of The Hague University of Applied Sciences as a statistician.
Sanjay holds a PhD in Mathematics from Utrecht University.
Hildegard Montsma – Contactpersoon Wiskunde en Industrie
Hildegard holds a Master in Mathematics and works as an independent trainer/instructor and project manager. She has twenty years of experience in the financial world both in Amsterdam and London. She worked at a commercial bank and two supervisory authorities – in policy, management, advisory and pioneering roles.
For Math4NL Hildegard is leading the establishing program and acts as the interface between mathematics and society.
Math4NL is een initiatief van de commissie Innovatie van Platform Wiskunde Nederland dat wordt gesteund door 4TU.AMI en NWO. In 2022 ging dit initiatief van start met oprichtingsbestuur bestaande uit Vivi Rottschäfer, Alessandro Di Bucchianico, Johann Hurink en Wil Schilders.
